Salmon fishing in River Ätran The town Falkenberg lies in Halland on the Swedish west coast. 100 km south of Gothenburg and 170 km north of Malmö. Communications By car: Road E6/E20. The Fishing and venues: The fishery covers 2,5 km of River Ätran's lower reaches from the bridge Tullbron and upstream to the bridge Laxbron. Lower reaches consists of a stretch of rapids - Garvareforsen - that are reserved for flyfishers only. In the upper reaches all legal fishing methods are permitted. The fishery is centrally located. There are walking paths on both banks and a park adjoining one of the bank. A self-catering fishing cottage is located at Laxbron, where you weigh your catch. There is a freezer service, and fishing equipments can be purchased there as well. Species: Ätran is a pronounced salmon river with a wild strain of salmon that reproduces naturally. Salmon may reach weights of 15 kg. Grilse weighing between 1 and 4 kg dominate the fishing in the spring and early summer and Sea trout are caught in March - April. Methods: Fly and spin fishing. Angling with shrimp is also permitted. Starting May 1, part of the stretch (Garvarebron-Tullbron) is reserved for flyfishing only. Season: March 1 - Sept 30 Sea trout are caught in March-April. The large fresh run salmon start the migration at the end of April and is fished during May until the beginning of June. Fishing for the smaller salmon (grilse) begins in June and continues all summer. Autumn fishing (Aug - Sept) offers good and interesting sport. Preservational work: Since 1978, one of the world's most comprehensive liming projects is carried out in River Ätran and its tributaries. Thanks to this and to the intensive fishing conservation efforts, the wild strain of Atlantic salmon in River Ätran today is reproducing naturally. Detailed information can be obtained at Falkenbergs Turistbyrå, where you also can buy your fishing permit, complete your fishing gear and hire equipment. Permits: The fishing licences cover the beat from Laxbron - Tullbron in Falkenberg. A special boat permit is required when a boat is hired for angling. Permits are also found at Falkenbergs Turistbyrå. Activities: There are several attractions and diversions in Falkenberg and vicinity. The old town is one of Sweden's best preserved old sektions with cobble stone streets, pottery shops, museums and other attractions. Falkenberg is also a wellknown resort with sandy beaches and bathing facilities. For sports enthusiasts there are opportunities for golf, tennis, bowling, table tennis, billiards, horseback riding, etc. For the fly tyer Vessigebro is one must stop. EmTe Flugfiske is run by a former winner in the World Fly Tying competition. It is a small shop on the countryside and should be included in a fly fishing program. Falkenberg is a lively town. Programs with a variety of entertainment with music and dancing several nights per week are offered there. The surrounding countryside is also ideal for excursions into the woods. There are several excellent fishing spots besides hiking and bicycle tracks. Opportunities for shopping are very good. Ullared is one of Sweden's most frequented shopping centres.
